It began when I developed high cholesterol...and my doctor warned me once more, he had already warned me about my weight many times, that I was damaging myself. Then the blood pressure became marginally high, and the aches in my feet and knees. Then it was a low thyroid. The aches I attributed to age. Next came Type II Diabetes, and he told me it was just one more step in the direction of destroying myself. He was pretty blunt about it. Even though it was Diabetes that woke me up, I'm not going to write about that. What it did do was motivate me to start a new way of eating, and the motivation to lose weight.
What I did was dive into nutrition and learned all I could about foods that are healthy and those that aren't. I learned how to read nutrition labels, because when the product states it's health food I have found that to seldom be the case. I learned that the amount of exercise one needs is really not as much as you might think. Walk or ride your bike for about 30 minutes a day is perfect.
The most difficult part for me was changing my eating habits. I taught myself how to make easy healthy meals from several websites such as the American Diabetes Association, My Food Advisor, and NutritionData, I enrolled in a 4 night course on diet and nutrition, and began meeting with a nutritionist. I began losing 3 lbs a week and dropped 70 lbs in about 7 months.
Now, don't get the idea that this way of eating is just for diabetics. After many discussions with my nutritionist and the diabetic nurse from the class I learned from them that this is the way we all should eat, whether we have diabetes or not. Many people have come up to me wanting to know how I did it and some have done the same with their eating and have been successful in dropping their weight to a more tolerable level.
Here are some basics to keep in mind when reading nutrition labels:
Keep total Carbohydrates between 45 and 60 grams per meal. Note: You can subtract Dietary Fiber from your Carbohydrates count.Keep Saturated Fat, Cholesterol, and Sodium 10% or less.Try and have a variety of meats, fruit, and vegetables.Doing this, you should have no problem losing weight and keeping the calories down. When you hit a plateau, don't give up. Just keep doing what you are doing and the weight will come off easily.
What I also do, per my diabetes nurse, is take one day a month and eat whatever I want. This way I don't feel deprived of the "not so good" foods.
But the rest of the month I have some healthy lunch ideas I use, and between meals I sometimes munch on some low carb snacks. I also start my day with a low carb breakfast using some healthy breakfast recipes I have developed.
I hope you can see some hope in changing your eating habits, as I was completely lost when I was confronted with being told I had to change my ways.
